IBM recently announced a new high-bandwidth Layer 3 ATM switch 8265, significantly increasing port density and scalability, while reducing the cost of switching networks. The company also released ATM and non-ATM improvements to Multiprotocol Exchange Server MSS. If users need to upgrade to switched networks, they can achieve efficient, scalable, low-cost networks with 8265 Networks ATM switches and MSS without having to invest in costly and complex backbone routers. The 8265 ATM switch takes full advantage of IBM’s ATM design concept and is based on the 8260 Multiprotocol Switching Hub, using IBM’s industry-leading ATM Prizma chip technology. The 8265 ATM switch is a completely non-blocking 12.8Gbps ATM switch with performance improvements up to four times, or 300%. The 8265 Nways ATM Switch supports 56 OC-3 ports or 14 OC-12 ports to deliver consistent, high-performance at high load. The switch platform is based on an open architecture that combines high port density with high reliability to support ATM backbone needs.
