It is already April, but the spring has yet to come to western Liaoning Province. Fortunately, winter jasmine out of the window of my house couldn’t wait anymore; it bloomed like a young girl with light yellow petals strewed around her braids. Right in this beautiful season, I got to receive a gift from spring –young poet Haisheng’s book, Children’s Songs Illustrated by Chinese Characters Graphic Evolution.
It is a book set of four volumes, heavy, exuding the aroma of ink. Holding Haisheng’s new book in hand, I was delighted like a kid. Meanwhile I pondered the question that how did the Chinese characters evolve? And how to illustrate children songs by graphics? Is there any direct or indirect relationship between these two? It is these question marks in my head that led me into Haisheng’s new book as well as the world of arts he created for the children.
This book is correctly targeted with appropriate format. One Chinese character corresponds to one children''s song. It introduces the evolution process of related groups of words and Chinese characters and the children''s songs are interesting and full of taste. There is a perfect joint of content and form, as well as art and knowledge. Besides, the book is categorized by units such as "Human life", "Nature: time and space," Plants "," animal ". Those Chinese characters and songs are just like glittering pearls subtly wired together.
Good ideas can never be separated from good works. Otherwise, they cannot succeed no matter how creative the ideas are, because creativity is just a general framework and it requires the support of good content. The Chinese characters is the treasure of our national culture as well as the embodiment of Chinese history and civilization. Nowadays the commonly used Chinese characters are three to four thousand, which provide a broad space for poet Haisheng to interpret children’s songs. However, it is not easy to interpret, illustrate and make willingly acceptable the profound Chinese characters by simple forms such as children’s songs. Fortunately Haisheng made a good and productive attempt in his writing and had achieved gratifying results.
The children''s songs and poetry written by Haisheng always emphasize good ideas and choosing the right angles to cut in the story. In this book, his conception has been brought into full play. For example, in the interpretation of the character "Sen", Haisheng’s attention was not limited to the dense forest; rather, he found a refreshing approach. Therefore the song “The Pencil is to Sprout” reads: the pencil head is drawing pictures / as he paints, he wants to sprout / he wishes to grow into a tall poplar / Back to the forest to find his mama. Under Haisheng’s pen, he endowed life to a small pencil head who not only draws but also longs for his mom in the forest. The word “xiang” (to want to) makes an excellent transition to the forest that makes one can not help but stunning. We can see good works, even through a tiny detail like a grain of sand, will allow the reader to taste the vastness of the sea. The lively language and vivid description is another feature of Haisheng’s works. In his children’s songs, there is always dynamic poetic lines conveying lively images popping in front of one’s eyes. For example, in the interpretation of the word "bird", he wrote “the birds fly around the trees playing games”; of the word "fish", he had "a small fish swims in the river, and sticks his head out of the water"; of the word "Miao", he had "the little saplings stretch their waist and spine, holding a string of morning dew." If we see the Chinese characters in the books as static symbols, then the songs by Haisheng are like a happy, lively boy playing and interacting with those characters. I believe this interaction will deepen the young readers love of Chinese characters and enhance the understanding of the knowledge of characters. By reciting these songs the young readers are to be immersed in poetry and get to enjoy its beauty.
