  Lai Jiancheng | Zhejiang University Press | ?65.00 | 536 pages | Aug 2010 | ISBN 978-7-3080-7719-4
The Ming Dynasty (1368~1644 A. D.) is an important dynasty in ancient China, which witnessed a most flourishing age and first contact with the western world in the history China (the Portuguese were permitted to build their housing in Macau in 1513). As far as the cause of its decline is concerned, some researchers argue “the fall of the Ming Dynasty was due to its frontier defense.” The book includes a study on the historical materials about the provisions and funds for troops at the frontier during the 60 years from the 10th year of the reign of Jiajing Emperor (1531) to the 30th year of the reign of Wanli Emperor (1602). Based on the data relating to the military provisions and funds for the thirteen frontier guards, it elaborates the trend of changes during Wanli Emperor’s reign, analyzes various influences and reports the restrictions to and measures for the military provisions and funds, and it is concluded with that: it is a fact that the provisions and funds for frontier troops imposed a huge burden to the government finance, and was dragging down the colossal Ming Dynasty to some extent when the effects of the problems with frontier defense are concerned.

On Beauty and the Existence of Human Beings
  Wang Yuanxiang | Zhejiang University Press | ?38.00 | 342 pages | Jul 2010 | ISBN 978-7-308-07757-6
The book is recommended to researchers and students of sociology and aesthetics, those interested in them, and also academic libraries at home and abroad.
  Comment of Reader:
“This is a book about beauty. I used to see a photo of a beach densely scattered with dead dolphins, for which the global warming-up and changes to the ecosystem is the major cause. I’ve also seen pictures of the starving African children. I would also recall the deaths and injuries during Sichuan Earthquake in 2008 and the bloodstains of the country victims of the Japanese bombers I witnessed when I was a child…Then, where is beauty? Beauty is a personal feeling and perception, which then broadens our understanding of this world, and inspires our thinking and wills. The recesses of beauty are the recesses of our mind, the recesses of nature; nature is the reality of beauty.” About the author
