What’s the best thing that’s ever happened to you?

Peyton: You have a bulldog! Come here, boy! Boy,
  you’re cute!
Joe: Yep, whoa…easy, easy! He’s a very vicious[危险的] attack dog.
Peyton: Yeah. He’s going to lick[舔] me to death.
Joe: Listen, you just can’t come walking into strangers’ homes like this. There’re a lot of weirdoes[怪人] out there in the world. Didn’t your mom ever teach you that?
  Peyton: Yeah.
  Joe: Well, where’s she?
  Peyton: On an airplane.
Joe: On an airplane? Well, who are you here with?
  Peyton: My father.
Joe: Well, you’d better go get him, because I’m sure he’s looking for you.
Peyton: He’s not looking for me.
  Joe: How do you know?
  Peyton: Because…he’s looking AT me.
  Joe: …What?
Peyton: Hi, we’ve never met before. You were married to my mom, Sara. Sara Kelly? My name is Peyton. I’m your daughter.

  Joe: Bed. Now.
  Peyton: I’m not even tired.
Joe: Well, I am. Go to bed.
Peyton: To think you walked out on[遗弃] my mom just to hang around with the sorry likes of[……
Joe: What did you just say?
  Peyton: To think you walked...
Joe: I didn’t walk out on your mom! She walked out on me!
Peyton: Oh, really? ’Cause she said you were self-centered, and selfish, and that everything always had to be about you. She said your head was so swollen she was
surprised they made a helmet[头盔] big enough to fit.
  Joe: She said that?
  Peyton: And more.
Joe: You know, it’s all coming back to me. Of course! Everything! All the talking and the arguing and the
complaining! And you know what? You’re just like her!
  Peyton: Oh, yeah?
Joe: Yeah! You think you’re right about…everything! Just like her!
  Peyton: What else?
Joe: You scrunch[把……揉成团] your nose when you get
  angry! Just like her!
  Peyton: Keep it coming!
Joe: You’re always working on me with those…those big brown eyes...well, I actually like that – it’s really cute. But it doesn’t matter, ’cause it’s just like her!
Peyton: Is that all you got?
Joe: And then you get inside people’s minds, and you drive them crazy! Just like her!
Peyton: Well, at least I got a mind, because if I didn’t, I’d
  be JUST…LIKE…YOU!
Joe: Well, I’m lucky, because as far as I’m
concerned[就我看来], you are nothing like me!
Peyton: Good! Because I am sick of it here!
Joe: What…what do you want from me? (Peyton screams and runs back to her room.) Don’t turn your back on me, little lady! Tell me what you want!
  Peyton: My mom!

但人家说话可是很有技巧的,从“Oh, yeah?”、“What else?”、“Keep it coming!”

Joe: Thank you for saving me.
  Monique: You’re welcome.
Joe: Totally out of my league. Only mothers can do this stuff.
Monique: Oh, not necessarily. I mean, it’s true that mothers are definitely smarter and kinder and funnier, and for the most part of the better at everything. But can I tell you something? I wouldn’t underestimate[低估] the power of the father.
Joe: “The power of the father”?
Monique: Sure. Dads are great for picking you up and dusting you off. They give you the courage to do things that you never thought you could. My father took me to my first ballet class.
Joe: Lucky for us he did.
(Weeks later, before the open night.)
Peyton: (peers through the curtain) Full house…oh, no…
  Joe: Hey.
Peyton: You know, Joe, I’m not feeling so good. We should just go home. Yeah, let’s go home.
Joe: Did I just hear the girl who forced me to learn
  pirouettes[足尖旋转] give up?
Peyton: But…I didn’t think there were going to be so many people.
Joe: You just have pre-game jitters[
That’s all. All athletes have those. Even me.
  Peyton: You do?
Joe: Come here, honey. Stand up. We’ve worked way too hard to quit now.
  Peyton: I know.
Joe: (shows Peyton his funny costume) All right, all right, all right. Listen, I don’t care how ridiculous[可笑的] either of us looks out there, okay? We’re going to go out on the stage, and we’re going to dance our tutus[芭蕾舞短裙]
off, ’cause my daughter’s no quitter.
  Peyton: No, she’s not.
Joe: And she never says no.

而这一段里的“picking you up and dusting you off”,字面上描述了父爱的关怀备至,细细体味下又能发现其中巧妙地融合了“pick sth. up”(收拾,整理)和“dust sth. off”(备好待用)的意味。

Peyton: You see, I thought you’d be better off[过得更好] without me. But judging by the butt[撞]-whopping[重击] you got out there, I guess I was wrong. I love you, Daddy. I wanna come home.
Joe: I love you too, Peyton. I love you so much.
Peyton: So, why aren’t you out there playing?
Joe: I thought the team would be better off without me.
Peyton: I didn’t come all this way to see my dad sit
  out[坐着看不参加] the big game.
  Joe: I’m really banged up[监禁,此处指无法上场], P.
Peyton: Did I just hear the King give up? We’ve worked way too hard for you to throw in the towel now. My dad’s
not a quitter. And he never says no.
(As they walk to the stadium, Joe remembers the question Peyton kept asking before.)
Joe: I have an answer to your question, P. Win or lose today, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.
