Tumor cells that grow in harsh environments often have a poor supply of blood, oxygen, and nutrients, whereas acetyl-CoA synthetase 2 (ACSS2) is overexpressed in nearly 40% of invasive ductal carcinomas. In the case of metabolic stress ACSS2 promote the use of acetic acid as an additional source of nutrients in tumor cells so that tumor cells can adapt to the harsh metabolic environment to maintain tumor cell survival.
