Sun于1987年推出第一个SPARC处理器,其定制的RISC(精简指令集计算)结构支持因特网计算的两个重要功能——网络连接及可扩展性。SPARC的设计理念是成为大型网络计算机的一部分,性能和容量均可以扩展。因此,在过去的13年里,Sun一直不断扩展该结构的功能,从32位平稳地扩展到64位,增添了多处理功能,增加了每个CPU的流水线数量,并提高了频率。SPARC也因此具有了适用所有应用系统的完全二进制向下兼容性。即使是从32位升级到64位结构也不例外。
Sun introduced the first SPARC processor in 1987, and its custom RISC architecture supports two important features of Internet computing - network connectivity and scalability. SPARC’s design philosophy is to become part of a large network computer that scales both in terms of performance and capacity. So for the past 13 years, Sun has been steadily expanding the capabilities of this architecture by smoothly expanding from 32 bits to 64 bits, adding multiprocessing capabilities, increasing the number of pipelines per CPU and increasing the frequency. SPARC therefore has full binary backward compatibility for all applications. Even upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit architecture is no exception.
