本文通过对锦筵、绣褥、地褥、舞筵、地衣、毛锦、毛布、毛褥等词语的考证,利用音韵、对音等语言学的方法,结合考古上的发现,认为这些词指代的事物皆为西域出产的一种毛制物品,既用作坐褥,也用作地毯,俗称地衣。“毯”是一种棉或毛织物,南北朝时“毯”字已出现,“地毯”一词五代宋也已出现。“毯”是由西域传入的,其译音因西域各国的语音不尽相同而用的汉字也不尽相同,可写作氍毹、氍(叟毛)、毾(登毛)等。毯可以看做(登毛)的省略形式。
