七位六七十岁的英国老人不约而同地来到印度一家由破败的宫殿改造而成的旅馆。他们此行的目的各异，但似乎都有点难以启齿：为年轻时的一段往事忏悔、少得可怜的退休金难以在英国度日、积蓄被女儿拿去投资后而养老金又捉襟见肘、寻找廉价医疗、为自己的晚年找个大款。他们怀着不一样的心情，在印度这个神奇的国度开始了新的生活。这就是《涉外大酒店》讲述的故事。
如果电影的主要角色是年轻人，甚至是中年人，那大家似乎都能对结局猜出个七八分来，但银幕上出现的是满脸起褶的一群人，这实在叫人有点摸不着头脑。不过，这也正是电影的精彩之处。因为我们通常很少把到异国冒险、新恋情、吃醋、傍大款等与老年人联系在一起。可看完这部电影后，你会觉得，片中除了一人的结局与年龄有点关系外，其余人的故事与青年人没什么两样。在影片结束时，有人结束了自己的感情，有人开始了新的感情，有人放下了自己的成见，有人有了新的奋斗目标。剧情起伏，给人不少惊喜，但结局也让人觉得顺理成章。影片中伊芙林的旅行日记总是适时地表达着老人的心声，总结他们的收获，展示他们在印度的心路历程，让人在这纷繁的故事中思考。
当然，这不是一部完全意义上的老人电影。影片的副线是旅馆年轻经理的奋斗与爱情故事。两条线索交织，似乎在告诉人们，人不管处于哪个年龄段，都会遇到相同的问题，都需要勇气去面对，需要胸怀去拥抱未知，结局可能与预想相距甚远，但只要你不放弃，希望总是有的。别忘了，It’s not yet the end.

Old habits die easier than we think，and new ones form.No longer do I reach out in the morning for Radio 4.My news comes instead from the Jaipur Herald.Soon，I might even grow accustomed to the storm of car horns and vendors.Can there be anywhere else in the world that is such an assault on the senses？ Those who know the country of old just go about their business.But nothing can prepare the uninitiated for this riot of noise and color，for the heat，the motion，the 1）perpetual 2）teeming crowds.Initially，you’re overwhelmed.But gradually，you realize it’s like a wave.Resist and you’ll be knocked over.Dive into it，and you’ll swim out the other side.This is a new and different world.The challenge is to cope with it.And not just cope，but thrive.

Douglas： Graham was talking about this marvelous temple.I thought you might want to come with me.
Jean： I’m your wife.Have we met？
Douglas： Would you really rather stay here all day？
Jean： Yes，given the alternative.
Douglas： When I walk out in the morning，all the street kids smile at me.
Jean： That’s ’cause you give them money.
Douglas： Um，OK.I’ll go on my own.
（Graham confides in Evelyn that he is trying to find the boyfriend he regrets abandoning in disgrace when he left India to go to university.） Graham： I always said，you know，I’m going to go back.I shall go back.And I never did.

Sunaina： If I could just take a few moments of your time to tell you about…
Evelyn： How long will you actually take？
Sunaina： Twe…twelve minutes.
Evelyn： Then you’ve lied to me already.No，I can’t talk to you.I’m watching TV.It’s my favorite program.Sunaina： Yes，but I really think that if you heard some of our special...
Evelyn： No…no.Don’t talk like a robot.Now just talk to me.You’ve heard I’m watching TV.
Sunaina： Is your husband watching with you，Evelyn？ Evelyn： No.No，he died.
Sunaina： Um，perhaps you...
Evelyn： You know，I’ve actually had a version of this call.A little while ago，I talked to someone who was so constricted by the scripts，well，sales agenda，that she spoke without a trace of humanity.As if she hadn’t realized that I was going completely to pieces at the end of the phone.
Sunaina： You must miss him very much.
Evelyn： Now，sympathy’s fine.But be more optimistic.Sunaina： Um，but，you know，sometimes I find when one door closes...
Evelyn： The rest of them stay shut as well.No，you’re right.Of course you’re right.It’s a new beginning.Now what do you want to talk to me about？ （to call center manager） There.
Manager： Three minutes？

（Graham talks to Norman，another hotel guest，in the hotel courtyard.）
Graham： I saw someone yesterday.A man I haven’t seen for years.A man that I’ve loved all my life.
Norman： Man？
Graham： Yes.
Norman： Carry on.

（After Norman leaves，Graham sits alone and later dies peacefully of a heart condition.）

Of course，it was inevitable.Put enough old people in the same place，it won’t be too long before one of them goes.Graham died of a heart condition which he’d had for many years.So he knew before he left that he would not be coming back.He wanted to die in India.He just didn’t want any of us to know.He kept his promise to take me to Udaipur.Manoj wanted him to have a Hindu burial there，by the lake.At the place they had visited together.Not a holy place.Although，for them，perhaps it was.It takes a long time for a body to be consumed.Many hours for the mourners to remember their dead.The fire must be lit at dawn，and by sunset，there must be nothing left but ash.Is it our friend we are grieving for，whose life we knew so little？ Or is it our own loss that we are mourning？ Have we traveled far enough that we can allow our tears to fall？

Douglas： We’ll get another flight.We’ll go back to the hotel and leave in the morning.
Jean： No.

Douglas： Yeah，but...
Jean： Could fate find a better way to tell us what we need to hear？

The only real failure is the failure to try.And the measure of success is how we cope with disappointment.As we always must.We came here and we tried.All of us in our different ways.Can we be blamed for feeling that we are too old to change？ Too scared of disappointment to start it all again？
We get up in the morning.We do our best.Nothing else matters.But it’s also true that the person who risks nothing does nothing，has nothing.All we know about the future is that it will be different.Perhaps what we fear is that it will be the same.So we must celebrate the changes.Because，as someone once said，everything will be all right in the end.And if it’s not all right，then trust me...It’s not yet the end.
