Seth: Claudia! ①Wait up! ②I’ve been meaning to ask you something.
  Claudia: Hey Seth, what’s up?
Seth: Umm…his is ③kinda 1)awkward but you just seem like the right person to ask.
  Claudia: Go ahead.
Seth: Well, I know we usually score about the same on our exams and I was wondering how you manage to stay so cheery?
  Claudia: What do you mean?
Seth: I know that neither of us is at the top of our class and, for me at least, it can really ④get me down. I’m just wondering how you deal with it.
Claudia: That’s easy. I just keep a positive attitude.
Seth: Yeah, but how? I mean my parents give me so much pressure to excel. Our family isn’t that well off and they’re really ⑤counting on me to make something of myself. It sometimes feels like I’ve got the weight of the world on my shoulders.
Claudia: Is it really that rough? Remember that’s there’s always somebody ⑥worse off than you.
Seth: Yeah, I know, but that knowledge doesn’t really help me to be any happier.
Claudia: You just gotta be confident is all. Let the bad 2)stuff 3)slide, like water off a ducks back.
Seth: Haha. Well how do you let it slide?
Claudia: Me personally? I vent my 4)frustrations by drawing. It helps others I know to just talk to someone, their friends or their family. Some people write in a blog. In extreme cases you might wanna see a
5)psychiatrist, but that’s probably as a last resort.
Seth: SoI like sports. And when I’m playing them I feel, you know, peaceful; more at ease. I forget about all my troubles. Is that what you’re talking about?
Claudia: Exactly. Playing sports is another way to let off steam. Some people like to go shopping. Basically anything you can do to make yourself feel better, without hurting yourself or others, is a good way to deal with any stressful situation.
Seth: Thanks, Claudia. I’m glad we had this talk.
  Claudia: Anytime. ⑦Take it easy!

  Seth: Claudia!
  Claudia:
  Claudia:
  Seth:
  Claudia:

  Smart Sentences

  ①Wait up等等
如果你让某人wait up,就是让此人慢下来,或停下来等等(to go more slowly or to stop and wait for you),是让此人停下或减慢正在做的事,而不是正准备做的事。 I was running behind Bob shouting, “Bob, Bob, wait up.”
  ②I’ve been meaning to我一直想
I’ve been meaning to see that movie.
kinda= kind of,类似的表达还有不少,如:gotta = got to, wanna = want to等。例:The movie is kinda boring.
  ④get sb. down使某人不快乐、沮丧
Low grades are getting Helen down.
它是depend on或rely on的近义词组。例: You can’t count on the weather being fine tomorrow.
  off在作副词时,与其它某些副词一起,如badly、worse、well、better、comfortably等,组成形容词性词组badly off、worse off、well off、better off、comfortably off等。
You’ll be better off taking the subway.
  ⑦Take it easy放松一些
这里的it 并没有特指,只是泛指生活,take it easy是指不要太拼命,要放松,(take things easy裷elax and not to do very much at all)。
-I have a lot to do this week as I need to meet the deadline.
-Hey, take it easy. Remember to take a break now and then.

  Talk about it
① How do you stay cheery?
② Do you have any suggestions for dealing with any stressful situations?
③ Is there anyone counting on you? For what?
④ What gets you down? How do you deal with it?
