The“Third Pole”usually refers to the Tibetan Plateau and sur-roundings as it is the largest glaciated zone on Earth after the Antarctic and Arctic[1].It is also one of the major hotspots in the world suffering from widespread and severe glacial lake out-burst flood(GLOF)hazard[2,3].GLOFs have often initiated follow-ing the sudden release of lake water due to dam failure[4],and are characterized as transient,low-frequency and high-magnitude flood events[3].While plenty of GLOF cases have been reported in the region[5,6],still in remote mountains, many valleys are not permanently inhabited or were uninhabited when GLOFs occurred in the past.Coupled with the fact that the magnitude of some GLOFs is too small to reach inhabited regions,it is conceiv-able that some previously occurred GLOFs have not been observed and reported.Based on this hypothesis,we first provide an expanded, most detailed and accurate glacial lake inventory to date for the Third Pole,in which 63,727 glacial lakes with sur-faces≥900 m2 were compiled.Based on this dataset,we then used numerous high-resolution satellite images to recognize character-istic geomorphic features that have resulted from past GLOFs,allowing us to identify 176 previously unreported moraine or bed-rock dammed GLOF sources across the Third Pole. This is more than twice the number reported in previous studies. Finally,we con-clude that the Himalaya,Nyainqentanglha,Gangdise Shan and Tien Shan regions are four major GLOF hotspots over the Third Pole.
