The residence time of the slurry in a single tank flotation machine is an important parameter necessary for the correct design of the flotation circuit. For any given design of flotation machine, the average residence time is usually determined by the residence time distribution (RTD) test results. Comparing the measured average residence time to the expected residence time and analyzing the shape of the RTD curve can provide useful information about the nature of flotation mixing. The RTD test results for three large-capacity flotation machines (Outokumpu flotation machine, Dorr Oliver flotation machine and WEMCO® R flotation) are discussed. The multi-parametric model led to the conclusion that the volumetric volumes of Outokumpu flotation machine, Dorr Oliver flotation machine and WEMCO® R flotation were 45%, 35% and 7%, respectively.
