Founded in 1980, Beijing Normal University Press(BNUP) is an integrated education press. Over more than 30 years of development, BNUP has always adhere to the publishing philosophies of “spreading scientific truth and promoting educational innovation” and “developing Chinese culture and sharing world civilization”, and has accumulated rich publishing resources, developed well-known brands of books and enjoyed a high reputation in the publishing and the education and the academic worlds.
In 2007, BNUP was in the first pilot batch of university publishing houses in China to change their enterprise status. Moreover, it took the lead in completing the transition. It has realized the development by leaps and bounds through systems reform and innovation, book systems transformation and reshuffling of sales systems. In 2009, BNUP won the “Best National Cultural Organization in Systems Reform” which is the only university press which enjoys such privilege, and it won the designation of “Top 100 Paper Publishing organizations” as among the first-class national publishing organizations. In 2010, BNUP won three of the China Governmental Publication Prizes: the best publishing organization, the best publisher and best paper. It was also awarded a Chinese government special grant for cultural industrial development.
After the transformation of the systems, BNUP sees education publishing as the main and professional publishing and trade publishing as complement with its powerful branding influence through the practice of the marketing. BNUP has been active in advancing the transformation of book structure for some years now, and has positioned itself as “an university publishing organization which sees educational products (including psychology) and humanities as the main, and well-selects products of social science and natural science”, creating competitive products. The transformation of book structure has achieved initial successes. BNUP has perfected the teaching material system for basic education and to elevate the level of reading materials for assisted learning, meanwhile, it has put a lot of effort into developing vocational education and higher education titles and academic works together with children’s books and trade books. In 2012, it developed a backlist of 7409 titles, among which, titles other than textbooks for primary and middle schools and teaching materials take up 62.2%. The transformation of book structure has achieved its overall goals, which laid solid foundation for the sustainable development of the press. BNUP has making great progress in copyright trading and international communication, pushing forward its books “going out”. In May 2011, the department of copyright and foreign cooperation was set up. which is focusing on the right trading especially how to promote the Chinese books going out.
BNUP took a big leap by realizing the goal of selling 130 titles to foreign counterparts at London Book Fair, Beijing International Book Fair and Frankfurt Book Fair in 2012, and it was awarded the title of Best Organization of Press and Publication(right trading) in Beijing. Meanwhile, BNUP has been active in applying for International Publishing Project of Classic China. General History of Chinese Arts, China Green Development Index Report 2011, Selected Works of Qi Gong have been awarded grants.
As one of the publishing bases of National Social Sciences, BNUP has been actively involved in the application for the National Social Sciences Funds. In 2012, eight titles acquired the above subsidization, which are Education in China, China Development Report on the People’s Well-Being 2012, A Research on the Institute of Siku Quanshu, and etc.. In addition, BNUP took an active part in the participation in the second term of multilingual translation and publication of the Project of Library of Chinese Classics and won fiver items of Chinese to German(two), Chinese to Russian(two), and Chinese to Arabic.
In the drive of Chinese publications going out, BNUP attach great importance to the cooperation with oversea influential and essential presses. For example, Education in China, subsidized by Chinese Academic Translation Project, set a precedent of co-scheming, co-investment and co-publication with Cengage Leaning, an American distinguished educational publishing group. China Development Report on the People’s Well-Being 2012 is to be published by Sage Publishing Group by means of copyright license. The Series of Integrated Risky Governance (10 titles) is collaborated with German publisher, Springer by copyright license. The 18th National People’s Congress of China Communist Party laid out the strategic plan to push forward the socialist culture construction, and provided a huge developing space for the “Going-out” of Chinese books. BNUP shall stick to the country’s “Going out” strategy for Chinese culture, do a solid job in terms of the books’ copyright export, enhance the communication and cooperation with the international publishing companies, and make its press the one which enjoys high reputation and international influence both home and abroad.
To achieve such goal, BNUP set up the following plans for the work in the following years: Firstly, it shall strive to build up the “Going-out” brand image for the press, especially in those fields where it enjoys a relative advantage like educational psychology, philosophy and social science, literature and art and environmental sciences. Besides that, it shall also improve the quality of its books, make better selection of the potential titles and then speed up the tempo of “Going-out” project.
Secondly, enhance the communication and cooperation with the international publishing companies and proactively open up new channels of cooperation. Not only shall BNUP focus on the cooperation with the mainstream publishing companies in the European and North American countries, but also it needs to develop the cooperative relationships in the fields of copyright transactions with Russia, Asian countries and Arabic countries. In addition to the usual copyright import-and-export mode, it will also try to develop new cooperation modes like co-publishing and co-marketing.
Thirdly, BNUP shall search for international agencies and establish good relationship with them in order to promote our selected academic titles and those which can reflect China’s current economy and social development to the whole world-to foreign university libraries and relevant academic institutions-to expanding the academic influence of Chinese books.
Fourthly, BNUP shall take advantage of close relationship with those famous foreign organizations like UNESCO International Research and Training Center for Rural Education (INRULED) to publish related academic books and show the world the new trends and progress of Chinese education, and thus to improve the international competitiveness of press.
Last but not the least, BNUP shall continue to develop digital publishing strength by establishing good relationship with foreign publishing companies and make new achievements in the “Going-out” project of digital publishing.
Today, BNUP has made great progress in terms of both social reputation and market influence, ranks top among all university presses in China in terms of economic returns and productivity, and becomes a key comprehensive publishing company nationwide. It should actively play a leading and exemplary role among university presses, especially normal university presses, spare no efforts to carry out “Going-out” project, especially in the field of education. Additionally, BNUP shall introduce the achievements of social and educational development in China to the world, and make its contribution to international communication and promotion of China’s education.
