近年来,自家用网络、办公室及会议场所的无线局域网络以至于机场、饭店、咖啡厅的公众无线局域网络(Public WLAN)热点(Hot Spot)架设成为众所瞩目的焦点,2003年Intel宣布大举投入无线局域网络技术的迅驰(Centrino)宣传,更说明了无线局域网络的迅速崛起,已经成为目前无线市场获利的兵家必争之地。自1997年国际电机电子工程学会(IEEE)公布用于2.4GHz频带、速率可达2Mbps的802.11物理层(PHY,PhysicalLayer)标准版本;及1999年公布用于2.4GHz频带、速率可达11Mbps的802.11b及用于5.8GHz频带、速率可达54Mbps的802.11a物理层标准版本;至2003年公布用于2.4GHz频带、速率可达54Mbps的802.11g物理层标准版本后,IEEE 802.11组织仍然继续推动及拟订相关的标准以提升无线局域网络的传输速率。
