The concept of “difficult choice” was put forward qualitatively and quantitatively and discussed. Three types of refractory ore are identified, namely “essentially refractory” (due to their complex mineral composition), “economically refractory” (due to the processing and disposal of waste materials to achieve the required concentrate grade High cost of treatment) and “environmental restrictions difficult to choose” (due to restrictions on the use of chemicals or disposal of gas, solid or liquid waste generated during the treatment process). An example of a quantitative description is presented, based on an imaging analysis of different sulphide ores (Suterland et al., 1989, 1991). Based on the typical process for handling various sulphide gold ores, the more complex treatment of refractory ores is illustrated.
