英国通俗作家哈葛德的小说以探险、神怪和爱情为主要题材,表征了19世纪的西方世界观念秩序,以文学隐喻的方式构筑了西方的现代思想意识和经验。在晚清西洋小说翻译大潮中,哈氏小说主要通过林纾及其口译合作者的译介为广大读者所喜爱,触发了晚清文人在社会转型期现代与传统的断裂中,对自我身份认同、现代意识探讨和对现代思想的追求。然而,晚清风行一时的哈氏小说在五四时期却备受贬斥,哈氏及其作品逐渐淡出中国学者的视野。林纾对哈氏小说的翻译,作为晚清西学翻译“宏大叙事”的一个重要部分,以一种体悟和想象,言说西方、建构自我,以小说话语的方式启引了思想文化的现代性。
British popular writer Haggard ’s novels with exploration, mythology and love as the main themes, characterized the order of the western world in the 19th century and constructed the modern Western ideology and experience in the form of literary metaphor. In the tide of the translation of the Western novels in the late Qing Dynasty, Hastell’s novel was loved mostly by Lin Shu and his interpreter and collaborator, which triggered the self-identity of the scholars of the late Qing Dynasty in the break between modernity and tradition during the social transition Modern Consciousness and Pursuit of Modern Thought. However, in the late Qing Dynasty, Hastell’s novel was much denigrated in the May 4th Movement. His works and his works gradually faded out of the sight of Chinese scholars. Lin Shu’s translation of Haste’s novels serves as an important part of the translation of Western studies in the late Qing dynasty and constructs the ego with a kind of comprehension and imagination. It expresses the modernity of ideology and culture in the way of novel discourse Sex.
