Interviewer: What do you think your appeal is?
Will Smith: I love living. I think that’s infectious. It’s something that you can’t fake. And I think that the camera can feel that I’m happy doing what I do and it’s something that gets inside of people.

Interviewer: Why do you think you’ve been so successful?
Smith: I’ve never really viewed myself as particularly talented. I view myself as, you know, slightly above average in talent. And where I excel is ridiculous, sickening work ethic. You know, while the other guy’s sleeping, I’m working. While the other guy’s eating, I’m working. While the other guy’s making love, I mean, I’m making love too, but I’m working really hard at it, you know.

Smith: The first time that I performed as an actor was the first day on the set of The Fresh Prince of 9)Bel Air.

The idea was simple enough. An 10)inner-city kid goes to live with his rich relatives in Bel Air, California. It was an instant hit. And what Smith lacked in experience, he 11)made up for with hard work.

Smith: You can look at the first six 12)episodes of The Fresh Prince, and I was so just hell 13)bent on not failing that I memorized the entire script. And you can see in certain shots, they tried to cut around it as much as they can, but I’m mouthing the other actor’s lines. It took six episodes for someone to tell me to stop doing it.
Interviewer: You’ve been in a lot of movies with special effects. Is that 14)calculated?
Smith: Absolutely.
When he first came to Los Angeles to become an actor, he and his manager did some simple research about the movie business.
Smith: We got the top 10 movies of all time, and we realized that 10 out of 10 were special effects movies, nine out of 10 were special effects movies with creatures, and eight out of 10 were special effects movies with creatures and a love story. So Independence Day and Men In Black were really 15)no-brainers.
He is married to the actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who was a good friend of his until they became romantically involved. She is every bit his match, in what is widely considered to be one of the best marriages in Hollywood. She says when Will makes up his mind to do something, it always happens.
