荡平岭,即老岭中段,位于现今吉林省白山市境内江源与临江分界处。清光绪三十四年(1908)因修通岭上之路而由东三省总督徐世昌将其改名为荡平岭。为了纪念此事,当年在岭顶立了两通石碑。碑首标题均作:《荡平岭碑记》。两通碑现为吉林省重点文物保护单位。这里还有一通浑江市(现白山市)人民政府于1982年7月26日所立的保护标志牌,上面写道:“老岭石碑”。《荡平岭碑记》的重大意义在于,刊明了国防不可不严,因而必须增设长白府治。而通长白必先通临江,通临江必先通老岭。拓通老岭,从而使连山屈盘、巉岩危壁数千年之障塞一举开通荡平,徐世昌便更老岭之名为荡平岭。现在,虽然开通了老岭隧道,但荡平岭修路的历史功绩断不可没,故特为之考释。
