The climate varies around the world, and its impact on the ecosystem varies, depending on the extent and nature of these changes. In northern Europe, experts predict that in the next 50 to 100 years, the annual rainfall will have greatly increased, accompanied by storms and flooding. The center of the victimized freshwater mussel Margaritifera margaritifera (L.) is in Scotland, where many of its populations may be at risk. For example, the floods have shown to have a negative impact on shellfish, and although these random events are rare in history, they may now occur frequently as a result of climate change. Shellfish stocks may also be affected by many other factors, including projected changes in climate, rising sea levels, changes in available habitats, changes in host fish stocks and human activities. This article explains how climate change may affect M. margaritifera and discusses the general principles governing the management of this species.
