对不同基因型玉米籽粒发育过程中若干生理生化指标的测定结果表明:果穗顶部大量败育的典型秃尖品种与对照相比,在授粉后4d可见吲哚乙酸(IAA)、玉米素核苷(ZR)达到较高的水平,但在授粉后8~12d却显著低于对照;8~12d出现较高的赤霉酸(GA_3)和低的脱落酸(ABA)含量。其中授粉后4~8d秃尖品种顶部籽粒的GA_3/ABA由3.5迅速升高到5.5,而不秃顶部籽粒的该值由3.0下降到1.5左右;授粉后4~28d秃尖顶部籽粒及穗轴中的可溶性酸性蔗糖转化酶活性显著低于对照,以上可能是导致其籽粒败育的重要生理生化原因。
