目前全世界集装箱船订单量中，约一半为1万TEU以上的超大型集装箱船。最近在集装箱船领域，呈现大型化趋势。法国海运咨询公司Alphaliner预测，在以后10年间要交付的集装箱船当中，7500TEU以上集装箱船占多数。以10月1日为标准，在集装箱船新造订单中，1万TEU以上的集装箱船所占的比例为48％，7,500-9,999TEU所占21％。
