This article describes a series of large format film recorders that use argon ion lasers and drum technology. Image format size up to 40 × 72 inches. The loggers are characterized by absolute accuracy as small as 20 microns and incredible increments of 2.5 microns, with continuously variable line spacing and very high speeds of up to 10-6 points per second. Can any source input be edited in numerical data? Although the system was developed for the art of drawing as part of a digital color image processing system, these recorders are also well suited for other applications, including many that are currently using x-y film plotters. The latest type of recorder allows binary (“line”) images to be taken. The most common lithographic film can be exposed by any half-tone image of the screen and angle. This device has been used for decoration, publishing, print samples and computer-aided mapping, seismographs and remote sensing (aviation and satellite) data logging. There is also a recorder that records variable density (continuous tone) film. Future development plans include offset printing exposure packages to further improve accuracy and speed up to four times.
