According to AKZO’s annual survey of the chemical fiber industry, the textile industry in Western Europe fell for the fourth consecutive year in 1993, which caused a serious impact on the chemical fiber industry. Affected by the overall economic downturn, textile output fell by 7% from 1992. This decline affected almost all countries and industries, although there was some stabilization in the second half of the year. Foreign trade in textiles and clothing shows different patterns. Total imports are the same as the previous year. The apparel industry continues to increase while textiles have declined. The automotive industry in Western Europe has been particularly hard hit during this economic downturn. The production of cars dropped by 15%; the production of trucks decreased by as much as 20%. Tire production fell 16% from the previous year, although demand fell by only 5%.
