The true forage value of forage grass includes a complex of animal and plant cords and affects livestock performance. It also determines the feed intake, digestibility, and the effective use of specific nutrients required by livestock, and may be limited by anti-quality factors. Plant genotyping, morphology and maturation are among the most critical determinants of feed value. Multiple comparisons of forage values demonstrate that Leguminosae is superior to Gramineae generally; temperate is better than tropical; leaves are superior to the stem; and immature forage is superior to mature forage. Climate, soil, fertility, and pests also affect feed value. The number and characterization of plant cell walls suggests that many changes in feed value are caused by plant factors. More research needs to address the chemical and physical characteristics of plant cell walls about their complexities in measurement, rate, and digestibility and foraging potential. Forage digestible energy and protein in the use of efficiency differences require more tests. Small differences in forage nutritional value and / or relative feed intake can cause large differences in livestock performance. In any event, the impact of anti-quality ingredients may be overwhelming so that routine assessments of forage value become meaningless. Scientists should look for what is happening, what biological meaning is, and how to control quality factors. Because humans are manageable as the most decisive factor affecting fodder value, we should be able to make significant improvements through research and pass on information to producers.
