Five United Nations agencies– the World Food Programme, the UN Children’s Fund, the World Health Organization, the Food & Agriculture Organization and the UN Population Fund– have appealed for $29.4 million to meet the health and nutrition needs of the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Last month, Desiree Jongsma, the UN Resident Coordinator in the DPRK, warned that timely imports of food and provisions of agricultural inputs have prevented a food crisis in DPRK this year, but the majority of the population in the country still faces chronically food insecure.
Ms. Jongsma noted that the health care services and supplies are unable to meet the basic needs of people, and infrastructure such as water and heating systems need repair. Educational facilities are also rapidly deteriorating.
