副油箱的用途是为了增加飞机的航程和续航时间,它的使用特点是飞机在飞行中根据需要而抛存。因此,副油箱是一种消耗性的部件。平时,一架歼击机至少要有三付副油箱备件,如果每一种飞机必须悬挂与其对应的一种副油箱,那么,随着飞机种类的增加,副油箱的品种就越来越多,势必给副油箱的设计,生产,运输、贮存及管理等方面带来困难。战时,副油箱的备用量更大,而且消耗量非常可观,如果不能及时供应,就将影响飞机的出勤率,将直接关系到战斗任务的完成。为了扩大飞机携带副油箱时的使用包线,简化飞机结构设计,降低副油箱的制造成本,提高副油箱适应战备的能力,必须提高副油箱的标准化、系列化水平。
