北京时间5月12日14时28分,在四川汶川县(北纬31度,东经103.4度)发生了8级地震,最大烈度达十一度。这是新中国成立以来破坏性最强、波及范围最广、救灾难度最大的一次地震。地震发生后,胡锦涛总书记立即作出重要指示,要求尽快抢救伤员,保证灾区人民生命安全。胡锦涛总书记、温家宝总理到灾区指导救灾。中共中央政治局常委会多次召开会议,全面部署抗震救灾工作。国务院及时组建抗震救灾指挥部指挥全国抗震救灾。
