Audition[试镜]. Finally get role. Get more roles.
Become internationally famous. Have baby?
That seems to be the path of Jessica Alba, the 20-something actress often regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the world. She’s now a part of the latest Hollywood trend: to make the move toward motherhood.
Alba, along with Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman and so many others – these are women who, after years of auditions and shooting, finally established themselves as superstars. The generation of actresses and singers
before them took motherhood as something that would bar their way to[阻碍] greater success. So why is
Hollywood jumping on the baby bandwagon[随大潮] now, when these ladies all have so much?
“It’s all about choice,” said columnist[专栏作家] Ted Casablanca. “It’s taking the old mold[模子] and breaking it. It’s saying ‘I can have a dynamic[活力的] career and be a dynamic mom at the same time,’ rather than saying ‘I have to choose between the two.’”
“There’s a way to use pregnancy[怀孕] to your
advantage,” said a senior editor. “Almost everyone loves to watch the growing baby bumps[隆起].”
Sometimes becoming a new mom can revamp[更新] one’s reputation.
“A lot of times, pregnancy might be used to change a bad-girl image. It’s a way of publicly announcing ‘My dirty days are behind me,’” said
another columnist Michael Musto.
And sometimes, they get
pregnant not for publicity, not for a new image, but simply for the kids.
“It’s hard for some people to
understand why a woman who has so much – fame, money, a great career – wants a baby. But it’s
just maternal[母亲的] instinct,” said
psychoanalyst[心理分析家] Bethany Marshall. “We’re so used to
pathologizing[病态化] our stars
because the ones who are messed up get the most attention, but, in fact, there’s nothing wrong with
being a mother.”
Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar after becoming a mom.
Victoria Beckham bore her first kid at 25; now she’s back and bigger than ever. And as long as she hits the gym to regain her Fantastic Four figure after giving birth, Alba will probably bounce[弹回] right back to No. 1 on all those beauty lists.
“The public has gone beyond the time when once somebody has given birth, they’re not considered sexy anymore,” Musto said. “People are now more willing to embrace the idea of a hot mama. And that’s what I think Jessica will be for sure.”
