The objectives of the present study were to investigate the toxicity of feed-borne fusarium my cotoxins on hematology, serum biochemistry and oxidative stress of broiler chickens, and to evaluate the efficacy of yeast cell wall adsorbent (YCW) (trade name is Detoxza, China) in preventing mycotoxins -induced adverse effects.A total of 300 one-day-old Arbor Acres broiler chickens (mixed sex) were randomly divided into 3 groups and received different treatments (5 repetitions per treatment) .Treatments were control, naturally contaminated diet (NCD) (aflatoxin, 102.08 mg/kg;zearalenone, 281.92 mg/kg;fumonisin, 5874.38 mg/kg;deoxynivalenol, 2038.96 mg/kg), and NCD + 2 g/kg YCW (NCDD).Broilers feeding NCD showed elevated (P < 0.05) serum alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), malondialdehyde (MDA) at 21-day and ALT, GGT, creatine kinase (CK),MDA at 42-day.Higher (P < 0.05) white blood cell (WBC), lymphocyte (LYM), platelet (PLT), red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) at 21-day and LYM at 42-day in whole blood, as well as hepatic mRNA expression of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) at 42-day were also observed in broilers fed with NCD compared those with control. However, lower (P < 0.05) mean corpuscular volume (MCV) at 42-day and total su peroxide dismutase (T-SOD) at both 21-day and 42-day were observed in broilers with NCD treatment when compared with those with control treatment.Dietary addition of YCW at the level of 2 g/kg in the NCD treatment showed a positive protection effect on GGT, T-SOD in serum, WBC, LYM, PLT,and HGB in whole blood at 21-day, and T-SOD, MDA in serum, LYM, MCV in whole blood, hepatic mRNA expression of Hsp70 at 42-day.It is suggested that feeding naturally contaminated diet for 42-day might result in a deleterious effect on broiler chickens, and addition of 2 g/kg YCW can partly attenuate the detrimental effects of the NCD feeding.
