The relationship between tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and the development of tumors has long been the focus of cancer research and treatment. Experiments and clinical studies have shown that the occurrence and development of different types of tumors are closely related to TAM. TAM is an important regulatory cell involved in tumor-associated inflammation, whereas the subtype exhibiting tumor-promoting growth in the tumor microenvironment is mainly polarized (M2-TAM). M2-TAM inhibits T cell antitumor activity and promotes angiogenesis through chemokine 18 (CCL-18), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9). Therefore, the infiltration of M2-TAM in tumor tissue may be an important indicator of tumorigenesis, development, metastasis and prognosis, and provide a new approach for the treatment of ovarian cancer. This review summarizes the important role of M2-TAM in the development of ovarian cancer and provides a new direction for the treatment and early diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
