导读:尼克国际儿童频道将播出新的动画喜剧片Harvey Beaks,近日《儿童时代》小记者采访了该片的剧组人员。
Is it possible for kids to relate to birds? Yes, if the bird is Harvey.
I recently visited Nickelodeon’s Animation Studios(尼克动画工作室), in Burbank, California, where the new animated series Harvey Beaks is created. I had the chance to talk to the show’s creator and executive producer(执行制片人)C.H. Greenblatt. Greenblatt before worked on SpongeBob SquarePants(海绵宝宝). Though the day-to-day production of Harvey Beaks and SpongeBob SquarePants is quite similar, it is much different when it comes to the story ideas. Greenblatt says he designed the series so kids and adults alike would be able to connect to the experiences of an animated bird.
“Harvey Beaks is more grounded and realistic than SpongeBob SquarePants,” Greenblatt told TFK.
A little birdie
It took Greenblatt five years to turn his idea for the show into a series. He says he first doodled an image of Foo, a “little imp”, and then came up with the idea to have Foo be friends with a bird. The bird he drew always had a bike helmet on, which was intended to show that the bird was a “little overprotective”. Greenblatt began to see more of himself in the bird character, which would finally become Harvey Beaks.
Greenblatt and his team of writers have a few methods for coming up with individual story ideas. Sometimes, they remember events from their childhood, and those are then modified for the show to be funnier and crazier. Other times, the team will think of an experience, such as failure, or a game, such as Mario Kart, and build a story around the idea.
Meet the cast
Kids voice most of the characters on Harvey Beaks. During my visit to the studio, I talked with seventh grader Madeleine Curry, who voices the part of Piri Piri. Her father is a voiceover actor, which got her interested in doing voice work too. In the beginning, says Madeleine, she was nervous because Harvey Beaks was her first animated series, but “the other actors made it so easy for me,” she told TFK.
Curry’s Piri Piri is described as positive, creative, and the “dreamer in the gang”. The young actor says she has found similarities between herself and her character. “We are both a little strange,” she told me. “We are strange in our own special way.”
Curry says fans of the show are able to laugh at each episode while also learning important lessons. “Harvey Beaks is a very sweet show and Harvey is such an awesome influence on people,” Curry says. “You almost never see Harvey sad, and it is nice to get to experience that in life because everyone can be a little happier sometimes.”
