More than three years ago, the American Academy of Pediatrics published a paper on strength training and lifting weights for pre-adolescent boys. The report was drafted because of the lack of justification for pediatricians to rationalize the safety and effectiveness of strength training and weight lifting in this age group. There is also a paucity of information on medical literature in this area, and more anecdotal reports. But physiologists want to know if strength training and weight lifting are good or bad. They want to know if strength training before puberty can lead to “muscle-restricted” epiphyseal damage, high blood pressure and excessive damage. They wondered if strength training could help pre-adolescent athletes prevent injuries.
