When I was a student of Chinese Department of Peking University in 1955, I taught him ancient Chinese literature. I heard him tell the history of Qing literature, “The Study of A Dream of Red Mansions” and “The Study of Strangers from a Lonely Studio”. He analyzed the ancient literature with the eyes of the modern well-known novelist, and made new suggestions when he was very wonderful and welcomed by his classmates. At that time, I did not know Mr. Wu and regarded him as a professor specialized in ancient literature. Later, a senior seniors told me that in 1952, after the adjustment of colleges and universities in China, he transferred from Tsinghua to Peking University and has been teaching modern literature. It did not turn to ancient literature until 1955. I am deeply intolerance to listen to him to explain the modern literature is regrettable. In 1959, Mr. Wang Yao, who spoke the history of modern literature, was positive because of his “History of New Literature.”
