Cardiac hypertrophy in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) is not paralleled by the level of blood pressure, suggesting that other factors other than blood pressure are involved in cardiac hypertrophy in SHR and that cardiomyocytes may themselves be the predominant factor. The authors hypothesized that cardiomyocytes release locally under stress conditions a protein that accelerates protein synthesis. By studying the protein synthesis of cardiomyocytes in vitro, we found that SHR cardiomyocytes homogenate supernatant can promote the protein synthesis of cardiomyocytes, which is as follows: the amount of tritiated leucine incorporation into the protein synthesis increases, and the activity of a specific tRNA increases.
