矿井火区是指在矿井内由于发生火灾而用防火墙封闭了的地区。防火墙在这里起着隔离火区,使之与大气失去连通的作用。因此当火区隔绝的很好时,其内部空气成份由于煤炭的燃烧便逐渐发生变化,二氧化碳(CO_2)含量迅速增高,而氧(O_2)含量减低,最后由于缺氧导至火灾的熄灭。但是实际情况往往不是如此顺利,因为没有不透风的防火墙,火区周围的煤柱也不是绝对严密的,所以往火区内部漏风就成为必然现象。由于漏风,新鲜空气进入火区内
