After the Nanjing massacre, British diplomats returned to Nanjing to restart the British embassy. British consuls promptly reported in the diplomatic messages the atrocities committed by the Japanese army and the social conditions in Nanjing at the time. At the same time, captains of the British and American gunboats cruising and berthing around Nanjing also faithfully recorded what they saw and heard inside and outside Nanjing City. These diplomatic documents, the report on the Royal Navy’s conditions and the weekly intelligence of the U.S. Navy add valuable information to the study of Nanjing massacre from a unique and different perspective.
