Sironcha Tehsil, in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, India, is a densely populated tribal settlement. As a result of the lack of all-weather roads and transport, there is still no survey to date. The government of Maharashtra decided to develop this backward area for industrialization, so that an estimate of water resources would become more pressing. The area is surrounded by three perennial rivers, with no surface water inside. Therefore, groundwater resources need to be estimated. This article describes how to apply remote sensing technology in combination with conventional ground methods to estimate the groundwater resources of 6,000 square kilometers in this area.
