在土壤学领域中,应用统计数学方法如变量分析,简单相关,一元回归等研究施肥效果以及个别土壤因素对作物和林木生长的影响,已有较长的历史.但是,由于土壤、肥料与植物之间的关系错综复杂,其中有为数众多的因子起作用;要依靠笔算、珠算或台式计算器分析多个因子的作用,是十分困难的,甚至是不可能的,这就限制了统计数学方法在土壤领域中进一步应用.五十年代以来电子计算机在各个领域中逐步推广,多元统计数学方法随之得到很大的发展.在这个基础上,土壤学领域中也发展了用于数值分类,生产力评价,肥料效应及作物产量预报等近代的多元统计数学方法.
