The P_53 gene mutation is the most common defect gene in lung cancer and may be a pathway for cancer initiation by environmental carcinogens. We investigated the mutation of the P_53 gene in lung cancer of uranium miners exposed to sorghum. Of the 52 large cell and squamous cell carcinomas, 16 (31%) had an AGG-to-ATG translocation at codon 249: this included never-smokers.
