Objective To investigate the role and relationship of Menin protein and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in the pathogenesis of parathyroid tumor. Methods Sixty-two specimens included seven cases of normal parathyroid tissue, 12 cases of parathyroid hyperplasia and 43 cases of parathyroid adenoma. The expression of Menin protein and TGF-β in them were detected by immunohistochemistry and compared with each other. Results The expression of Menin protein in the normal group and the hyperplastic group was significantly different from that in the adenoma group (P <0.05). There was no significant difference between the normal group and the hyperplastic group (P> 0.05). The expression of TGF-β in normal group, hyperplasia group and adenoma group showed no significant difference (P> 0.05). However, there was a significant correlation between the expression of Menin protein and TGF-β in adenoma (P <0.05). Conclusion Inactivation of Menin protein plays an important role in the pathogenesis of parathyroid tumor. Menin is a key protein in TGF-β signaling pathway.
