Objective To understand the characteristics and patterns of injuries among primary and secondary students in Guangming New District, Shenzhen, formulate preventive measures for student injuries and effectively prevent student injuries. Methods A total of 1 middle school and 1 primary school pupil were sampled in Guangming New District for injury monitoring. The form of report card was used to collect the 2010 incidence of injuries and their related information, and SPSS 13.0 was used for descriptive statistical analysis. Results A total of 4 139 primary and secondary students were monitored and 119 cases of injuries occurred (82 males and 37 females). The average incidence of injuries was 2.88% with an average age of 10 years old. Most of them fell / crashed, with 31.93% (38 / 119), 29.44% (35/119) of the lower extremities and 25.21% (30/119) of the head. Injuries were mainly bruises / abrasions, accounting for 56.30% (67/119); student injuries occurred in the schools accounting for 61.30% (73/119). The cost of student injury treatment was 30.25% (36/119) in the range of 101-1,000 yuan. There was significant difference (P <0.05) in the medical expenses between different injury sites and degree of injury. Conclusions The incidence of primary and secondary school students in Guangming New District is higher than the average level of primary and secondary school injuries in Shenzhen. Publicity and education on prevention of injury among primary and secondary school students should be strengthened so as to raise awareness of injuries and self-protection awareness and reduce accidental injuries.
