The effect of dose-division on the viability of ICR / JCL and LACA mice, the number of bone marrow (BMC) and hematopoietic stem cells (CFU-S) in the femur, and the ability of CFU-S to self-renew were studied. Dose division has a significant impact on the survival rate of mice. At 2 months after irradiation with 18 Gy, 40% and 15% of the mice that received 6 doses of 3.0 Gy and 4 doses of 4 doses of 4 Gy survived, respectively, but all mice that had been irradiated with 6.0 Gy had died in all. When the total dose of 12Gy divided into 2-4 exposure, most mice can survive more than 5 months. Although the number of BMCs in each femur returned to normal or near normal levels 2 months after irradiation, the CFU-S content in the femur was only 40% of that in the control and the self-renewal capacity of CFU-S was only 25%. This hematopoietic residual damage persisted at 11 months of irradiation, with no significant difference between the different dose-divided groups.
