When Jonathan Mann, outgoing director of the Global AIDS Project, was posted at WHO headquarters, at least 100 staff gathered in the lobby to applaud him. He raised a clenched fist and thanked them for his support. In 1986, Mann and one of its officers set up an AIDS research center. Four years later, this research center has grown into a research institute with $ 109 million in funding and 300 full-time and half-time researchers, making it the largest WHO project. Mann traveled the world and implemented his global strategy to eliminate AIDS, helping 155 countries to develop AIDS prevention and control projects. At this moment, he became an eloquent speaker and advocate defending human rights. He said AIDS will not stop because of discrimination against patients, unwarranted accusations and coercive policies
