The idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood, but it wasn’t until my third year in high school that the possibility took hold. Until then I’d been bored by everything associated with English courses.
When our class was assigned to Mr. Fleagle for third-year English, I predicted another cheerless year. Late in the year we talked the informal essay. Mr Fleagle distributed a homework sheet offering us a choice of topics. None was quite as simple-minded as “what I did on My Summer Vocation”. I took the list home and did nothing until the night before the essay was due. Lying on the sofa, I finally faced up to the unwelcome task, took the list out of my homework. The topic on which my eye stopped was “The Art of Eating Spaghetti(意大利面条)”. This title produced an extraordinary sequence(连串)of mental images. Vivid memories came flooding back of a night in Belleville when all of us were seated around the supper table- my mother, Doris, Uncle Hal and Aunt Pat served spaghetti for supper. Suddenly I wanted to write about the warmth and good feeling of it, but I wanted to put it down simply for my own joy, not for Mr Fleagle. To write it as I wanted, however, would violate all the rules of formal composition I’d learned in school.
Two days passed before Mr. Fleagle returned the graded papers, and he returned everyone’s but mine. I was preparing myself for a command to report to Mr. Fleagle immediately after school for punishment when I saw him lift my paper from his desk and knock for the class’s attention.
“Now, boys,” he said. “I want to read you an essay. This is titled “The Art of Eating Spaghetti.”
And he started to read. My words! He was reading my words out loud to the entire class. What’s more, the entire class was listening attentively. Then somebody laughed, then the entire class was laughing, but with open-hearted enjoyment.
What I was feeling was pure delight for demonstration(示范)that my words had the power to make people laugh. It was the happiest moment of my happiness by saying, “now that, boys, it’s of the very (精髓) of essay. Congratulations, Mr. Baker.”

A. my essay was full of mistakes
B. they were attracted by my essay
C. I was asked to teachers’ office after class
D. Mr. Fleagl read my essay to the whole class

Some days, the beeping(嘟啫声)of incoming messages gets overwhelming(使人受不了的), but technology does facilitate(使变得容易)quick communication at little cost. I resisted as long as I could, but two months ago, I finally threw up my hands and became one of WeChat’s 400 million users worldwide. As a reporter, I have to keep an eye on text messages and e-mails from interviewees, editors and readers. I also monitor stories on various websites and news feeds, as well as keep up with friends and family on social media—with their own messaging apps.
Did I want to juggle, on top of all these, another communications platform? Not really, especially since I needed uninterrupted quiet time for writing. I continued to say no to WeChat even after friends told me it had become the best way to know of gatherings within our circle.
My determination wavered a bit, but I stood firm, when one interviewee asked to make initial contact on WeChat. The means of reporting were definitely changing, as I watched one colleague conduct an interview on WeChat, asking questions via short voice messages and receiving similar responses.
Then, this spring, I started planning my wedding back home. Many wedding vendors(代理商)in Manila, such as designers, makeup artists, and musicians, now prefer to use smartphone messaging apps to communicate with clients(客户) overseas. One planner I met, Yap, can be found on three IM services and six messaging apps. I was surprised to learn that she also uses WeChat, which she discovered at a wedding planners’ conference this March.“I mainly use it to get in touch with business colleagues and friends from Beijing,”
I eventually gave in. Overnight, I installed WhatsApp (a US company reporting 500 million users), Viber (Japan, 300 million) and, WeChat. Some days, the beeping of incoming messages gets overwhelming, but the apps do facilitate quick communication and cost practically nothing.
Besides helping me to discuss business with wedding vendors, the apps have also enabled me to chat with family and friends all over the world. They include a former roommate working in South Africa, and a 2-year-old niece who cannot read or write but knows how to send photos.
41. The underlined phrase“threw up my hands”in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _______.
A. rang up B. gave up C. set a goal D. made a decision
42. Why did the author refuse to use Wechat at the very beginning?
A. Because he thought it helpless in his reporting job and life.
B. Because he had chosen another communications platform.
C. Because he was unwilling to accept the new technology.
D. Because he didn’t want to be interrupted during writing.
43. Who made the author change? A. One interviewee who invited him to contact on WeChat.
B. One of the planners using Wechat in his wedding party.
C. His former roommate who was working in South Africa.
D. One of his colleagues who conducted an interview on WeChat.
44. We can know from Paragraph 6 that ________.
A. Wechat helps communication easy at no cost at all.
B. Wechat is the third largest communication platform.
C. The modern technology develops far more quickly.
D. The newly technology brings disadvantage as well.
45. What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?
A. To introduce a newly welcome communication platform.
B. To warn people of overusing Wechat during their daily life.
C. To explain why a newly communication platform is popular.
D. To give tips on how to install and use Wechat to coomunicate.

Tom looked down at her. She asked if he could help put on her socks. Instead, he said, “How are you feeling? Your sugars and blood pressure were high but they’re better today. The nurse mentioned you’re anxious to see your son who’s visiting you today. I bet you really look forward to seeing him.”
She said, “Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story.”
Surprised and embarrassed, Tom sat down and helped her with the socks. She began to tell him that her only son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him in five years.
Baker.”

43. Who made the author change? A. One interviewee who invited him to contact on WeChat.
B. One of the planners using Wechat in his wedding party.

Tom was a doctor. One Sunday, he approached his patient’s room in a hurry and stood at the doorway. She was an old woman, sitting at the edge of the bed, struggling to put socks on her swollen feet. He crossed the doorway, spoke quickly to the nurse, and scanned her chart noting she was in stable condition.
She believed that the stress of this contributed greatly to her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, Tom asked if there was anything else he could do for her. She shook her head and smiled. All that she wanted him to do was to listen.
