Objective To understand the types, sources, pollution status and development trends of major food contaminants in Fangchenggang City and find out the hidden dangers of food safety in time. Methods According to the relevant provisions in the “Manual for Monitoring Chemical Contaminants and Hazardous Factors in Food”, the sampling of foodstuffs in Fangchenggang City was monitored. The laboratory testing items included indicators of pollutants related to harmful chemicals and microorganisms. Results The average overconformity of food chemical pollution in Fangchenggang City was 17.24% in 2007-2013. Among them, arsenic, cadmium and lead were the most polluted ones, exceeding the standards of 26.70%, 26.17% and 19.72% respectively. The average rate of microbial contamination in food was 6.69%. The microbial species: food-borne pathogens, coliforms, total bacteria and Escherichia coli were 3.31%, 20.47%, 24.02% and 23.68% respectively. Conclusion There are different levels of food contamination in Fangchenggang City. Effective precautionary measures should be strengthened and the relevant management and control system should be established in a targeted manner to ensure food safety.
