[Objective] To observe the effect of omega-3 fatty acids in improving clinical symptoms and oral health-related quality of life (OHQOL) in patients with recurrent aphthous ulcer (RUA). [Methods] Forty-eight patients with RUA were randomly divided into experimental group and control group, 24 cases were given ethyl polyacrylate soft capsules and placebo orally, once a day, three times a day for 6 months. The number of ulcers, the degree of pain, and the duration of ulcers in both groups were evaluated using OHIP-14 to assess OHQOL improvement. [Results] There were 2 cases lost in the test group, 1 case refusal in the control group and 45 cases in the two groups. There was no significant change in the number of ulcers, the pain VAS and the duration of ulcer in the control group while the indexes in the test group continued (P <0.05). Before the treatment, OHQOL in both groups was at a mild symptom level, and after treatment there was a certain degree of improvement. The experimental group was limited in function, physiology Pain, mental discomfort, limited physical ability, restricted mental capacity and total score were better than those in the control group (P <0.05). However, there was no significant difference between the groups with the loss of social ability and the physical and psychological defects (P> 0.05). [Conclusion] Omega-3 fatty acids have a good therapeutic and preventive effect on RUA, and the symptom improvement is more obvious with the prolongation of treatment time. However, more studies are needed on the exact dosage and course of treatment.
