This article, based on the three basic steps of interpretation of historical paintings illustrated by the American-German image scientist Panovsky, explores the methodology of the interpretation of ancient narrative paintings in Chinese art history literature. This dissertation attempts to question the old “Encoding-Decoding” communication mode by using the “explicit-reasoning” communication mode proposed by “Relevance Theory ” developed in cognitive science and pragmatics in recent years. During the process of reading and painting examples, the key role of using reasonably inference of image creation in the original territory to interpret images was demonstrated, and a new interpretation of the basic framework of ancient narrative painting was put forward.
