A chemistry professor in Sweden, who had been struggling with a complex problem for about eight years, has finally managed to solve it, but only with the help of his 10-year-old son.
Linus Hovm?ller Zou helped his father, Sven Hovm?ller, discover the 1)atomic structures of a type of crystals called “approximants.” The boy is now co-author of a paper published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.
Linus: (via translator) It feels pretty good. It feels fun. And the fact that I’m one of the youngest is fun.
Professor Hovm?ller had asked his son for help after he noticed his 2)aptitude for solving Sudoku puzzles. His father says that the fact that Linus knew nothing about chemistry or crystals probably helped in solving the problem.
Sven: (via translator) I think I know too much about this. I…I know so many things. Keeping so many pictures and knowledge in my head can get a bit 3)muddled. You don’t see the forest for the trees. But Linus, who did not know anything about chemistry or 4)crystallography, came with a clear and 5)unspoiled brain.
With his first paper already published in a scientific journal, Linus now dreams of becoming a scientist or an artist.
