本文调查了三种耐用木材(Afzelia africana J.E. Smith;Erythrophleum suaveolens (Guill & Perr.) Brenam. Syn. E guinensis G.Don. or Milicia excelsa (Welw) C.C. Berg. Syn. Three species of durable wood (Afzelia africana JE Smith; Erythrophleum suaveolens (Guill & Perr.) Brenam. Syn. E guinensis G. Don. Or Milicia excelsa (Welw) CC Berg. Syn. Chlorophora excelsa (Welw) Benth. Of heartwood extracts (air-dried in 60% methanol) and two proprietary wood preservatives (CCA and Penta) inhibited three wood-decaying fungi under exposed soil block design conditions (Coridopsis Polyzona Klotzch; or Trametes cingulata Fr.) on the relative potential of the blood larvae seen and their thresholds determined. The dosages of extracts and preservatives were 8.009, 24.778, 48.056, 96.111 and 144.167 kg m-3, respectively. The sample exposure time was in accordance with ASTM D1413-72 for 14 weeks and 18 weeks, respectively. The results showed that within the threshold range, any one of the heartwood extracts or wood preservatives exhibited significant inhibitory effects on wood decayed bacteria at a significant level of 0.01 in the study. The relative efficacy of these biocides depends on the type of fungus. None of the heartwood extracts or wood preservatives (except for the treated African poisoned arrowwood treated with the highest reserve levels) can be given a “very long lasting” rating for treated wood. The possible reasons for the relative stamina reduction of native tree species are complex. There was no significant difference in efficacy between each heartwood extract and either of the specialty wood preservatives (CCA and Penta) at the highest level (144.167 kg m-3) at a significant level of 0.05.
