【Abstract】Listening is important for college students,especially for students who are majoring in English and it is also the most difficult part of English study.So it is quite important to choose a good listening textbook,however,traditional listening textbooks have so many disadvantages that it’s hard for students to form a good habit for listening.Firstly,some disadvantages of traditional listening textbooks will be stated.And some suggestions will be given for a good listening textbook.Finally,the writer will give some advice to teachers who are teaching listening.

1.Disadvantages of Traditional Listening Textbook—Listen to This
First of all,take Listen to This for an example,it is based on writing materials and has no pictures at all.And most of the topics are not interesting at all.Maybe it’s suitable for a beginner,but it is not suitable for further learning.
Secondly,in Listen to This,there are only several question types; they are,answering the questions,multiple choices,filling in the missing words,and True or False questions.During the classes,the teacher let students listen to the tape and then finish these questions.If they don’t do correctly,then the teacher let them listen to them again,check the answers and then explain.This kind of textbook and teaching will make students lose their interests in learning English.
Thirdly,in Listen to This,in each lesson there are 3 sections but these sections have no relations with each other.
2.Suggestions for a Good Listening Textbook
The first one is principle of authenticity.The materials chosen should be authentic,such as news reports,advertising,and notices and so on.And the communication should be authentic,too.
The second one is principle of process.
The third one is principle of interest.For warming-up activities,it’s important to arouse students’ interests and let them relax themselves.So during this part,some pictures related to the listening materials can be designed in order to let students know some background information,which can make them interested in the materials they are going to listen.For after-listening activities,some beautiful English songs and some technical terms with vivid pictures related to music,PE,art and so on can be designed.
The fourth one is the principle of modernity and the last one is principle of practicability.
For a good listening textbook,in each lesson there can be several sections,but these sections should center on one topic.And in each lesson,there should be warming-up activities,during which some pictures can be presented,in-class activities and after-class activities. 3.Suggestions to Teachers who Teach Listening
Firstly,in each listening textbook,there are some good materials which are worth listening; however,there are some materials are not so good.So,a teacher should use different textbooks when they are preparing for the lesson.In this way,students can listen to some different things not from their textbooks,which can make them know them just listen to their textbook is obviously not enough.
Secondly,when a teacher is preparing for the lesson,news is a good material.Every time a teacher can choose a piece of latest news in which students may be interested.At the beginning,the teacher can choose some pictures related to the news and say some background information,which can make it easier for students to understand the news.Then news listening and finally the teacher can present some news listening skills,such as “who”,“what”,“when”,“where”,“why”,and “how”.And after the students find out these 6 wh-questions,it is easy for them to retell the news.In this way,their speaking skills can also be treated.
4.Conclusion
English listening is important and so are the listening textbooks.But for each listening textbook,there are some disadvantages.So,when a teacher is preparing for a lesson,she/he can use different textbooks at the same time and choose some of them from each textbook.Of course that will make a teacher much busier and much more tired,but it is good for students.And at the same time,the teacher can download some latest news,TV programs and so on,which make students know something that happened recently and at the same time their horizon will be widened.English listening and English listening are closely related to each other,so it is necessary to train their speaking skills at the same time when their listening skills are trained.In this way,students may not feel so bored.
