The divergences between Levinas and Buber about ecological ethics are yet another form of controversy between anthropocentrism and non-anthropocentrism. In order to resolve the objectification and instrumentalization of the subject-object model, Buber advocated non-anthropocentrism that goes beyond the relationship between subject and object. But Levinas criticizes Buber’s non-anthropocentrism for having formalistic characteristics. Levinas questioned Buber, mainly on the premise of non-reciprocal asymmetrical relations. Through the analysis of this question, we can conclude that, based on equal and asymmetrical relations, we can establish a kind of ecological ethics that takes people’s responsibility as the center and responds to the mutual relationship between man and nature.
